Dorothy Irving Scholarship

Thu, Jan 23, 2025, 18:00
Konserthuset Stockholm, The Grünewald Hall (Stockholm)
Kathrin Lorenzen (Soprano), Oskar Ekberg (Piano)
Award-winning lieder with Duo Lorenzen-Ekberg.The legendary concert singer and educator Dorothy Irving (1927–2018) left a powerful impression on the Swedish music scene. Her artistry was bold and meticulous, with a deep dedication to the expressive power of lyrics and music. Before they passed away, she and her husband Lars Fjellstedt founded a scholarship administered by the Royal Swedish Academy of Music to “promote and preserve the art of the lied.” The scholarship is now being presented for the second time and goes to Duo Lorenzen-Ekberg, comprising soprano Kathrin Lorenzen and pianist Oskar Ekberg: “for their breathtaking lightness and cooperative, playful and in-depth presentation of historic and human dimensions in a modern, international vocal repertoire, and for revealing the existential depth of Scandinavian lieder.”Kathrin Lorenzen, born in Flensburg in 1994, has become established as a popular soloist and concert vocalist in Germany and Scandinavia. In January 2024, she won the Royal Swedish Academy of Music’s Soloist Prize. In May 2024, Kathrin won second place and the audience prize in the international Mirjam Helin Competition in Helsinki, in competition with 485 singers from 57 countries.Oskar Ekberg, born in 1977, has been an in-demand soloist, chamber musician and orchestral musician nationally and internationally since his debut with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2004. He has garnered significant appreciation for his dedication and recordings of Swedish music, including all of Johan Helmich Roman’s harpsichord suites, earning him a nomination for a Grammis Award in the category of Best Classical Album.

Grieg’s Piano Concerto

Sat, Jan 25, 2025, 15:00
Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Ryan Bancroft (Conductor), Leif Ove Andsnes (Piano)
Edvard Grieg's Piano Concerto is a classic among classics, constantly featured on concert programmes worldwide, and probably available in hundreds of recordings. Grieg was 25 when he composed the music, and the fact that it was his first work with an orchestra is astonishing. Taking on his compatriot's superhit is none other than Leif Ove Andsnes, one of the world's leading pianists. The concert opens with the exciting premiere of Rocking Bodies by Chrichan Larson. Rocking Bodies plays with the idea of resonant bodies moving in waves around a centre – sometimes repelled, sometimes drawn in. Larson is active as a composer and cellist, a prominent musician who has often been seen in the cello section of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.Concluding the concert, Chief Conductor Ryan Bancroft leads the orchestra in Wilhelm Stenhammar's exquisite Serenade. Stenhammar got the idea for the music during a stay in Florence in 1907. In one of his letters, he wrote: ”I want to compose as beautifully and tenderly about the South as only a Nordic person can.” He succeeded, for the Serenade is a masterpiece.Read more about chief conductor Ryan Bancroft

Leif Ove Andsnes

Sun, Jan 26, 2025, 15:00
Leif Ove Andsnes (Piano)
The 24 preludes completed by Chopin during the notorious winter he spent on Mallorca with his lover George Sand, are some of the most demanding pieces a pianist can tackle. The range is enormous, from small and short simple pieces to brutal outbursts and virtuosic explosions. The famous Raindrop Prelude No. 15 is said to be inspired by the perpetual raining on the island.Norwegian Leif Ove Andsnes, one of the world's most acclaimed pianists, begins his recital with his compatriot Edvard Grieg's piano sonata, written three years before the famous piano concerto. And there are similarities: romantically flowing melodies and glimpses of Norwegian folk music. Grieg has also, like Bach and Shostakovich, embedded himself in the music: the first three notes are e, h, g – the initials of his name Edvard Hagerup Grieg.Between Grieg and Chopin, Andsnes performs music by another compatriot, Geirr Tveitt (1908–81). He was a concert pianist himself, and his both powerful and sometimes meditative music is often inspired by folk music from Hardanger Valley.

Beethoven and Pejacevic

Wed, Jan 29, 2025, 18:00
Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Jirí Rozen (Conductor)
Beethoven was drawn to figures, fictional or real, who dared to stand up against injustices. Egmont in Goethe's drama of the same name was one such fictional but clearly influential figure for Beethoven. In the overture, he summarizes the drama, from the slow introduction through tragedy to a triumphant conclusion. The orchestra is led by the young and increasingly renowned Czech conductor Jirí Rozen, who is making his debut with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. In Dora Pejacevic's music, traces of Wagner, Brahms, and Bruckner can be found, but it is also strongly personal with rich colors and profound seriousness. After a cautious, slow introduction, the contrastive and determined music of this symphony from 1918 unfolds, painting vivid natural scenes. The music also contains exuberant pirouettes that are swept away by dazzling outbursts towards the end. It is an impressive work by a composer who was long neglected.

Kind of Jazz I – Chamber Jazz

Wed, Jan 29, 2025, 19:30
Konserthuset Stockholm, The Grünewald Hall (Stockholm)
Warren Vaché (Cornett), Jan Lundgren (Piano), Jacob Fischer (Guitar), Thomas Fonnesbæk (Double bass)
Jan Lundgren is one of our foremost musicians, and with around fifty CDs and a range of projects and collaborations, he has consistently shown his ability to embrace tradition while always evolving. Each year, Jan Lundgren presents three concerts under the banner Kind of Jazz – unique meetings with invited artists and ensembles. Kind of Jazz 2025 marks the series’ seventh season.“The title Chamber Jazz signals an intimate way of making music together, and this time there will be no drums,” says Jan Lundgren. “For the first time, I’ll be working with American cornetist Warren Vaché, who is considered one of the greats today and one of the few still active who has played with legends like Benny Goodman. Warren’s roots are in the swing era of the 1940s, with early influences such as Roy Eldridge and Bobby Hackett. The Great American Songbook will be central, and we’ll definitely include something by Duke Ellington.”Joining Jan Lundgren and Warren Vaché are two of Denmark’s finest jazz musicians: guitarist Jacob Fischer – “we’ve played together in many settings since the 1990s; he’s a true musician’s musician,” and bassist Thomas Fonnesbæk, “arguably Denmark’s top bassist and a successor to the great Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen.”Note: The cornet is similar to the trumpet but is slightly more compact and has a warmer sound.

Bruch Violin Concerto No. 1

Thu, Jan 30, 2025, 19:00
Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Jirí Rozen (Conductor), Inmo Yang (Violin)
Beethoven was drawn to characters, fictional or real, who dared to stand up against injustices. Egmont in Goethe's drama of the same name was one such fictional but clear role model for Beethoven. In the overture, he encapsulates the drama, from the slow introduction through tragedy to a triumphant conclusion. The orchestra is led by the young and increasingly renowned Czech conductor Jirí Rozen, making his debut with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.Triumphant melodies are also found in Max Bruch's first violin concerto, one of classical music's most beloved concertos. It's heavenly beautiful music with irresistible romantic fervor. The soloist is the exceptional South Korean violinist Inmo Yang, winner of two of the world's most prestigious violin competitions: the Paganini Competition in Genoa and the Sibelius Competition in Helsinki. He now debuts with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. In Dora Pejacevic's music, traces of Wagner, Brahms, and Bruckner can be found, but it is also strongly personal with rich colors and profound seriousness. Soup with violin and piano

Fri, Jan 31, 2025, 12:15
Konserthuset Stockholm, The Grünewald Hall (Stockholm)
Rena Kimura (Violin), Per Olsson (Piano)
Valborg and Tor Aulin were siblings and prominent figures in Stockholm's music scene during the late 19th century. And talented! Inspired by France, Valborg created two excellent string quartets and a series of songs and piano pieces, including this evocative Berceuse.Like Valborg, Tor Aulin was a highly skilled pianist, but he was best known for leading the Aulin Quartet as the first violinist. He was also one of the founders of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, hence one of the halls in Konserthuset bears his name. The titles of the four watercolors performed by the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic's Anna Roos Stefánsson, together with pianist Henrik Berg, aptly describe the atmosphere of the music: Idyll, Humoresque, Lullaby, and Polka. Also prominent during her lifetime was Dora Pejacevic. Her mother was Hungarian, but her father was a Croatian nobleman, so Dora became part of the Croatian nobility around the turn of the last century. We hear her harmonically dense and melodically thoughtful "Slavic" sonata for violin and piano.***Menu: Potato leek soup with chive oil. The soup is served with sourdough bread, crispbread, butter, mineral water/light beer, coffee/tea, and a piece of chocolate. Wine and beer available for purchase for those who wish. All soups are lactose and gluten-free. Please inform us of any special dietary requests when booking.

New Friday with Borregaard & Rostamo Duo

Fri, Jan 31, 2025, 20:30
Konserthuset Stockholm, The Grünewald Hall (Stockholm)
Borregaard & Rostamo Duo
New Friday is concerts for those who with curious interest want to explore our contemporary innovative music. This Friday evening, we meet the Borregaard & Rostamo duo.Johannes Rostamo moves musically from early Baroque to contemporary art music, from jazz to folk music. Since 2008, he has been the principal/solo cellist of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, and since 2022 a professor at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. Oslo- and Copenhagen-based Andreas Borregaard made his debut as an accordion soloist at the age of five. Today, he is one of the very best on the instrument. In their spiritually oriented program, the Borregaard & Rostamo duo mix a thousand years of music. We hear works by the abbess and medieval mystic Hildegard of Bingen, Jouni Kaipainen's evocative Elemental Chanting, Britta Byström's Epiphanies, and the Polar Music Prize-winning Sofia Gubajdulina's In Croce – On the Cross. The latter is a title that relates both to the crucifixion and to how the gestures of music intersect.***New Friday is the series for anyone who is curious and interested in exploring the new music of our era. Come early, stay late – the bar will be open before and after the concert with drinks and appetizers.

de Frumerie and Stravinsky

Sun, Feb 2, 2025, 15:00
Konserthuset Stockholm, The Grünewald Hall (Stockholm)
Emma Agnas de Frumerie (Violin), Kajsa William-Olsson (Cello), Johan Fransén (Clarinet), Bengt Forsberg (Piano)
Bengt Forsberg travels around the world, particularly as a sought-after chamber musician and sensitive interpreter of romantic piano music. He is also a regular guest at the Konserthuset, where he performs with a trio consisting of clarinet, violin, and cello from the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.Together, they present fantastic but also unusual music, such as the piano trio by French composer Charlotte Sohy (1887–1955). She lived during the "La belle époque," strongly associated with Paris, where she was born. Her extensive production includes a symphony and several orchestral works, an opera, a lyrical drama, masses, songs, piano pieces, and other chamber music – including this sparkling piano trio. Also rare on the repertoire is the Austrian composer Walter Rabl. He stopped composing in his thirties to focus on conducting and coaching singers – which is regrettable because this attractive piano quartet, reminiscent of Brahms, contains sweeping romanticism and inviting melodies. As a fine contrast, we hear Stravinsky's entertaining Three Pieces for Solo Clarinet. The concert opens with music by Gunnar de Frumerie, who, along with Lars-Erik Larsson and Dag Wirén, is usually described as a neoclassicist. As we can hear in the sonata for cello and piano, he was also a romantic and influenced by the Baroque as well. Emma de Frumerie, from the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, who participates as a violinist, is the great-niece of Gunnar de Frumerie.

Elin Gabrielsson (Violin), Emma Nyman (Violin), Christopher Öhman (Viola), Johannes Rostamo (Cello), Jonas Nordberg (Lute), Marcus Mohlin (Harpsichord), Maria Keohane (Soprano)
In the early decades of the 18th century, a new trend emerged where beautiful arias were accompanied by a violin or a cello. Here, we get to enjoy exquisite singing and captivating instrumental music with the great Swedish soprano Maria Keohane. Some of the composers who embraced the new style were Alessandro Scarlatti, Antonio Caldara, Giovanni Bononcini, and Nicola Porpora – the latter, in addition to writing over 50 operas and numerous other compositions, also taught several renowned singers, including the castrato Farinelli.Since its establishment in 2015, Orpheus Baroque Stockholm has become an indispensable part of the capital's music scene and a meeting place for both philharmonic musicians and some of Sweden's leading freelance baroque musicians. The artistic directors are the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra's solo cellist Johannes Rostamo and the lutenist Jonas Nordberg. The ensemble's more chamber music-oriented approach, as we encounter here, is presented under the banner of Orpheus’ Treasure Trove.

Haas and Mahler

Thu, Feb 13, 2025, 19:00
Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Joshua Weilerstein (Conductor), Christina Nilsson (Soprano)
Pavel Haas (1899–1944) and Gustav Mahler (1860–1911) emerged from similar roots in the Bohemia that is now Czechia: Haas from Brno and Mahler from Kaliste, 120 kilometers away. Both were Jewish, but Haas hailed from a Moravian-Jewish family and Mahler from an Austrian-Jewish one.Pavel Haas was deported during World War II to the Theresienstadt concentration camp, later to be murdered in Auschwitz. His only symphony remained unfinished. It wasn't until half a century later that the remaining material was orchestrated, and the work premiered in 1998. Haas' creative output is characterized by Bohemian and Jewish influences, with elements of folk music and jazz. The symphony is a remarkable, staggering piece. If darkness pervades Haas' symphony, Mahler's fourth symphony is brighter, lyrical, and playful. It's been dubbed "sky blue" at times, and the fourth movement features a soprano solo: "Wir geniessen die himmlischen Freuden," "We enjoy the heavenly pleasures."The soloist is our latest soprano star in the international music scene, Christina Nilsson. Conducting this captivating program with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra is the American conductor Joshua Weilerstein, noted for his championing of rare works.
